Stunning April 'Pink Moon' 2019 This Friday

Wednesday, April 17, 2019 - 14:11

The full moon of April, called the Pink Moon, will occur the morning of April 19 at 7:12 a.m. EDT (1112 GMT).

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this year's Full Pink Moon will reach peak fullness at 4:12 a.m. PST on Friday.

The Pink Moon is not actually pink. It is simply the nickname that was given to April's full moon by Native Americans back when seasons were tracked by the lunar calendar.

The name is derived from one of the first flowers to bloom in spring: the Wild Ground Phlox. The flower turns a brilliant shade of pink and it’s come to be associated with the April full moon – traditionally a sign of springtime and Easter and the notion that the hard winter is behind us.

Other nicknames for this Good Friday full moon include the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.
