Eminent Researcher on Iran and Persian Language Passes Away at 72

According to Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), former professor of Tehran University and a recognized professor at Beijing University, Dr. Mozaffar Bakhtiar, passed away on August 14th in Tehran. His burial ceremony was held on Saturday at the Artisans` Block of the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery and was attended by his family and relatives.


Dr. Mozaffar Bakhtiar was an eminent Iranologist, Persian scholar, codicologist, and translator. He was born in 1943 in the  Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. After receiving his PhD from Tehran University, he took up a position there as faculty member in the Department of Literature. After years of teaching and research, he succeeded in achieving the title of Professor. Also, he was a notable expert in sinology and orientalism and, accordingly, he held the title of “distinguished professor of Beijing University”.

Dr. Bakhtiar has trained several generations of researchers in the Persian language and literature. Some of his former students are now prominent lecturers in Iran and the world. Up until 2009, Dr. Bakhtiar was a full professor at Tehran University.
