Central Tehran IAU Investigates Nano Ulcer Treatment

Researchers of Islamic Azad University, Central Tehran branch, have synthesized a nanocarrier which can effectively cure stomach ulcers.

An ulcer is a sore that develops on the lining of the digestive tract such as in the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. Gastric ulcers are considered to be among the most common digestive diseases and if neglected, they can lead to dangerous complications such as cancer.

According to Iran Nano Technology Initiative Council, Dr. Homayoun Ahmad-panahi, faculty member of Central Tehran IAU, stated that the aim of his research is to synthesize and introduce a new nanocarrier as an effective and targeted medicine for treating ulcers.

“Reduced cost of treatment, boosted drug effectiveness, and less side effects are the advantages of this Nano carrier,” he explained.

The synthesized nanocarrier in this project consists of a polymer and an oxide component. Magnetic nanoparticles are modified by smart polymers. In addition to ensuring that the process of drug delivery is done in a topical, controlled manner, this allows for minimized side-effects because of the temperature-sensitive nanoadsorbent.

Results show that almost 73% of a drug loaded into Nanocarrier has been released in simulated gastric fluid environment in an hour. The nanocarrier has been synthesized at lab scale and has shown good results in tests up until now.

The investigation has been carried out by Dr. Homayoun Ahmad Panahi and Sara Nasrollahi, MA student in this branch.
