Shiraz IAU Student Wins Gold in Rio Paralympics

A student of Shiraz IAU won a gold at the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Paralympic Games on Friday.

According to an ISCA report, Sareh Javanmardi, business management student at Islamic Azad University, Shiraz branch, is Iran's first ever female gold medalist in shooting para-sports, winning the P2 (women's 10m air pistol SH1) event. Olga Kovalchuk of Ukraine secured the silver and Turkey's Aysegul Pehlivanlar collected bronze on debut.

"I'm very happy that I have received the first gold medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran and for my delegation," she said, "I am very happy that this triumph reminds my people that disability is not a limitation." She finally added, “I will do my best to improve my records in future competitions and bring further happiness to the people of my country.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran National Paralympic Committee has sent a 111-strong delegation to the twelve-day-long sporting event. Iranian sportsmen and women will compete in 12 different sports.

Around 4,350 athletes from more than 160 countries will be participating in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games from 7-18 September 2016.
