Iran Male Kumite Team Tops Karate World Championships

Iran’s Male Kumite Team has come in first at the 28th edition of Karate World Championships in Austrian city of Linz.

According to an ANA report, The Iranian Kumite squad overcame its all rivals, including Switzerland, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, and France, and finally faced Japanese opponents in their last encounter. The Iranians defeated Japan 3-2 and bagged the gold medal of this tournament.

Iran’s Kumite team includes Mehdi Khodabakhshid, IAU student of Kermanshah, Ali Fadakar, Sajjad Ganjzadeh, Bahman Asgari, and Zabihollah Pourshib who prevailed in a tough final-round competition against Japan.

This was Iran’s second achievement in the history of the tournament as Iranian karate practitioners had previously stood on top of the podium in the 2012 edition of the event.

The Karate World Championships saw 2000 athletes and coaches from 135 nations gather at the Tips Arena in Linz, Austria, from October 25 to 30, 2016.
