Ayatollah Rafsanjani, IAU Founder and Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council Passes Away at 82

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the principal founders and trustees of the Islamic Azad University, passed away minutes ago.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani, whose long-standing services to the fundament of the Islamic Revolution of Iran were one of the major tenets of the movement and who held the chair of the Expediency Council in the government of the Islamic Republic, passed away in the Shohadaye Tajrish hospital after attempts to revive him failed following cardiac arrest.

Born on August 25, 1934, Ayatollah Rafsanjani served as the fourth president of the Islamic Republic, from 1989 to 1997. A proponent of academic progress in Iran, he was a prolific writer and political theorist whose contributions to the Islamic Azad University are remarkable.

As a member of the media group of the Islamic Azad University, ISCANews honors his memory and hopes to continue upon the path laid by his pioneering ideas and brilliant thinking. His loss will be felt by the political and academic societies and the entire nation of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
