IAU Students Shine in 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games

Students of Islamic Azad University, Mianeh, and Juybar branches brought home gold and bronze medals in the 4th edition of Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan.

According to an ANA report, Iranian male and female taekwondo fighters staged remarkable performances at the Baku Sports Hall in the Azerbaijani capital city of Baku, and brought home four medals, including a gold.

Mahdi Yousefi, Mianeh IAU student, snatched the gold medal in the men’s minus 63-kilogram weight division after he managed to take down his Kazakh opponent Alimzhan Serikbayev 27-7 in the final encounter of the category.

The Iranian men's national swimming team, Sina Gholampour, Mehdi Ansari, Jamal Chavoushi and Beniamin Gharehhassanlou, landed third in men's 400-meter Freestyle Relay. Persian swimmers followed after Turkey and Indonesia. Mehdi Ansari, another Mianeh IAU student on the team, recorded a time of 24:32 in the 50-meter butterfly stroke, earning the bronze medal for Iran.

In the -61 kilogram category in wrestling, Masoud Esmaeilpour won his Turkish rival with the result of 2-1 in the first round but he was defeated by Haji Aliyev, an Azerbaijani freestyle wrestler, and won the bronze medal. Esmaeilpour is an Asian champion and winner of the world championships. He represented Iran at the Wrestling Men's freestyle 60 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games started in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 12 with the motto “Solidarity is Our Strength.” The tournament wrapped up on May 22, 2017.
