Monday, October 16, 2017 - 16:12

Saholan is a historical water cave located in a namesake village, 43 km to the east of Mahabad, in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to an ISCA report, the name of this cave is adopted from the Kurdish word “SAHOL” which means ice.

Based on the geomorphological evidences, the cave has been formed under phreatic conditions. Throughout the cave, there are horizontal ledges of calcite deposits along the walls that are indicative of higher water levels in the past.

Till now 250 meters of walking way and 300 meters of water have been found. The average water depth is 12 meters and 25 meters in the deepest place. The humidity of the cave changes between 70-75% while the temperature is mostly between 5 and 10.
