Faculty members of Islamic Azad University in cooperation with professors from Berlin University have compiled a book, “Citizens’ Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran,” published by Routledge, a British multinational publisher.

According to an ISCA report, the book “Citizens’ Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran” was edited by Hans-Liudger Dienel, M. Reza Shirazi, Sabine Schröder and Jenny Schmithals.

This book is clarifying the paradoxical question of participation in Iran: it is old and new, dysfunctioning and functioning, disappointing and promising. This slippery status of participation convinces scholars to suggest contradictory interpretations and understandings about the existence, functionality, and potentiality of this concept.

The book therefore shows the different perspectives, interpretations, historical developments and case studies of participation in Iran, thus giving the reader a kaleidoscope view on the question of participation in Iran.

The third chapter of this book, “The Evaluation of Participatory in Iran- from Reality to Operation” was written by Hamid Majedi and Zahra Saeideh Zarabadi, discussing a City Development Strategy (CDS) which is an action plan for equitable growth in cities, developed and sustained through participation, to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
