Toyota Reveals 'Roaming Shops' Concept

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 - 16:42

Toyota unveiled a concept vehicle which is a mobile platform for e-commerce, ride sharing and medical services, for a start.

The Japanese auto giant's president Akio Toyoda unveiled the new initiative at the Consumer Electronics Show, seeking to get ahead of rivals offering single-use autonomous transporters, Daily Mail reports.

The 'e-Palette' vehicle platform features a boxy electric-powered minibus designed to handle deliveries or even bring retail services to consumers, but can also be used for ridesharing and other purposes.

The new initiative is part of an effort to transform Toyota from an automaker to a multifaceted 'mobility' company, Toyoda said.

Toyota took longer than rivals to warm to the idea of autonomous vehicles, but has committed $1 billion through 2020 to develop advanced automated driving and artificial intelligence technology. It plans to begin testing cars that can drive themselves on highways around 2020.
