Iranian Researcher Presents a Method For Identifying Water Behavior

A faculty member of Sharif University of Technology in cooperation with researchers from England, Spain and Japan have succeeded to present a method which is identifying exact behavior of water molecules.

According to an ISCA report, Dr. Ali Esfandiar in collaboration with Prof. Andre Geim, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on graphene, from University of Manchester, and other researchers investigated “Ballistic molecular transport through two-dimensional channels” and “Anomalously Low Dielectric Constant of Confined Water,” which the results published on Journal of Nature and Science.

Results of the research provide insights into atomistic details of molecular permeation, which so far could be accessed only in simulations, and show a possibility of studying gas transport under a controlled confinement comparable to the quantum-mechanical size of atoms.

Based on the another research, “Anomalously Low Dielectric Constant of Confined Water,” the dielectric constant ε of interfacial water has been predicted to be smaller than that of bulk water (ε ≈ 80) because the rotational freedom of water dipoles is expected to decrease near surfaces, yet experimental evidence is lacking.

Researchers report local capacitance measurements for water confined between two atomically flat walls separated by various distances down to 1 nanometer. The experiments reveal the presence of an interfacial layer with vanishingly small polarization such that its out-of-plane ε is only ~2. The electrically dead layer is found to be two to three molecules thick.

These results provide much-needed feedback for theories describing water-mediated surface interactions and the behavior of interfacial water, and show a way to investigate the dielectric properties of other fluids and solids under extreme confinement.
