S & R IAU Researchers Produce Antibody Through Designing New Peptide to Detect Cancers

A researcher from Science and Research Islamic Azad University in cooperation with researchers of Avicenna Research Institute have produced an antibody through designing new peptide to detect cancer.

According to an ISCA report, initially discovered as a dominant antigen on colon carcinomas, the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) was considered a mere cell adhesion molecule and reliable surface-binding site for therapeutic antibodies.

Recent findings can better explain the relevance of EpCAM's high-level expression on human cancers and cancer propagating cells, and its negative prognostic potential for survival of patients with certain cancers. EpCAM has oncogenic potential and is activated by release of its intracellular domain, which can signal into the cell nucleus by engagement of elements of the wnt pathway.

One of the researcher, Mehrzad Ghari stated that the research was carried out based on producing an antibody through designing a new peptide. In this method, an antibody can be designed and produced specifically against a specific protein.

Peptides, or small protein fragments, are often too unstable to use as drugs, but in this study, the researchers developed a way to stabilize the molecules and help them get into target cells.

The investigation “Monoclonal and Polyclonal Antibody Production Against EPCAM Biomarker and Investigating EpCAM Expression in a Series of Cancer Cell Lines” was done by Mehrzad Ghari, Dr. Fatemeh Ghaemimanesh, faculty member of Avicenna Research Institute, Dr. Gholamreza Javadi, faculty member of S & R IAU and Dr. Saeideh Milani.
