S & R IAU Researcher Extracts Essential Fatty Acid from Elaeagnus Angustifolia

Tuesday, October 2, 2018 - 11:30

A student of Science and Research Islamic Azad University could identify oily compounds of herbal source of fatty acid and extract them successfully.

According to an ISCA report, essential fatty acids are lipids that are not metabolized by the body and therefore must be obtained from the diet. Many studies have positively correlated essential fatty acids with reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, infant development, cancer prevention, optimal brain and vision functioning, arthritis, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and neurological/neuropsychiatric disorders.

Further understanding of the molecular aspects of essential fatty acids will be the key to devising novel approaches to the treatment and prevention of many diseases, therefore, Hamideh Namvar, researcher of S & R IAU investigated the benefits of Elaeagnus Angustifolia, commonly called Persian olive (sinjid), which is a rich source of Vitamins, Minerals, Protein, Calcium and Fiber.

As she explained, sinjid is a rich source of supplying essential fatty acids so its oily compounds could be extracted through applying the method of supercritical fluid extraction. Based on the result, there are five fatty acids including stearic acid, palmitic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic in Elaeagnus Angustifolia.

The research was carried out by Hamideh Namvar and led by Dr. Sima Askari, assistant professor of chemical engineering, IAU Science &Research Branch.
