S & R IAU Student Presents New Method of Nitrate Removal From Water

A student of Science and Research Islamic Azad University has presented a new method to remove nitrate ion from water.

According to an ISCA report, Nitrates (NO3) are an essential source of nitrogen (N) for plants. When nitrogen fertilizers are used to enrich soils, nitrates may be carried by rain, irrigation and other surface waters through the soil into ground water.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of nitrate as nitrogen (NO3-N) at 10 mg/L (or 10 parts per million) for the safety of drinking water.

Nitrate levels at or above this level have been known to cause a potentially fatal blood disorder in infants under six months of age called methemoglobinemia or "blue-baby" syndrome; in which there is a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

The researcher, Shokouh Bavarsad investigated the effectiveness of adsorption for nitrate removal and analyzed the behavior of carbon nanoadsorbents modified with iron and zirconium, which has been done for the first time in the country.

Based on the results, 85% of nitrate has been absorbed by modified with iron and zirconium so the method can be applied in water purification and sewage treatment as well as water resource recovery in an industrial scale.

The research has been led by Amir Fouladi and carried out by Shokouh Bavarsad in Science and Research Islamic Azad University.
