Iran Reaches to the Technology of Solar-Hybrid Desalination System

Engineers of an Iranian knowledge-based firm have reached the technology of producing new generation of solar desalination system.

According to an ISCA report, fresh water sources are depleting rapidly as the global demand for water continues to increase because of rising demands for natural resources combined with the effects of climate change, especially in dry land and coastal/inland regions.

As one of the oldest water treatment processes in human history, Desalination of seawater has proven to be one of the most reliable backup choices for addressing fresh water needs of not only human beings but industries as well.

Desalination treats water by dissociating salts from saline water, resulting in potable water which has low levels of dissolved organic and inorganic salts called total dissolved solids (TDS).

In this regard, an Iranian knowledge-based company could produce solar-hybrid desalination system and as Mohsen Nazari, head of the firm, said, this technology has been only produced by some companies in the U.S. and Germany and “there is no domestic production.”

He explained about the MED/MVC-ZLD system and noted that an exergo-economic model is used to assess the performance of a multi-effect desalination plant integrated to a mechanical vapor compressor unit (MED-MVC) with a high water production capacity day.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a treatment process that its goal is to remove all the liquid waste from a system. The focus of ZLD is to reduce economically wastewater and produce clean water that is suitable for reuse.

ZLD technologies consist traditionally from brine concentrators and crystallizers that use thermal evaporation to turn the brine into highly purified water and solid dry product ready for landfill disposal or for salt recovery.

Mohsen Nazari added that being modular as well as its easy protection are considered as the main advantages of this system which can be applied in agriculture and industry as well.
