Iranian Researchers Could Make “Xanthan” Domestically

An Iranian knowledge-based company has succeeded in producing a strategic material “Xanthan” which can be applied in varied industries.

According to an ISCA report, Xanthan gum is a polysaccharide produced by the fermentation of the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. Xanthan gum is a substance used in making some foods and medications. It has different effects in these products: It can add thickness, keep textures from changing, and hold ingredients in place.

Mojtaba Badri, CEO of the company, stated that only six countries own the technology of producing “Xanthan”, and “Iran ranks the 6th position."

He added that right now, the company can meet 30% of the country’s demand, "also the product can be compared with European and American models in terms of quality."

Due to the extraordinary properties as stabiliser and thickener xanthan gum is widely used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Xanthan gum is also used in various industrial applications as well as for oil drilling. In all these areas xanthan gum is accepted as an excellent stabiliser and a useful processing aid.
